Finding a home is not easy. Imagine a person looking for a place to live with a disability condition. Do you think it will be easy for that person to successfully find a home to stay in before the day ends? Of course, not! SLS or Support Living Services consist of a scope of disability support services for adults with developmental disabilities who choose to live alone or close to other people with disability too at their own homes with themselves alone, or leasing in the community.

Supported living services

There is decent, accessible, and affordable housing for people with disabilities. There are two main forms of SLS:

A person with disability shares a house or lives in a block of flats with other people and receives support from a caregiver in meeting their needs, which can be up to 24 hours daily. In this program, the support that a disabled person can get is provided on-site with accommodation; this is called accommodation-based support.

It is where a disabled person lives and owns property or has a flat in a group of similar properties. Each disabled person receives per day or per week support to meet their needs, which happens in a few hours from a caregiver. The program is called:

• Outreach support
• Floating

Get support living

Move or set up a supported living service a person with a disability needs support from someone, such as a care manager or social worker. They clarify whether a person is eligible for support services and whether the supported living suits the needs. They help the support provider work out the best way of getting the most adequate accommodation and support that meets the needs.

Support services for people with disability

Living with a disability must not prevent someone from leading an enjoyable and active life. Additionally, being supported to get out and to their local community. Understanding the person, background and personal history, and interests has been vital for setting up disability support services. These help to achieve control and choice over disabled person’s basic needs, such as:

• Access public transport
• Maintain their social and cultural life
• Carry on with daily living tasks (shopping and cleaning)

If a person has a developmental disability like Autism Spectrum disorder, a condition related to brain development that affects how a person socializes and perceives others causes problems in social communication and interaction, including repetitive and limited patterns of behavior. The supported living services don’t only provide adults with such developmental disabilities with:

• Homes of their own
• Support them to live independently
• Ensures provided care and support
• Skills for jobs life, jobs, and connections in the community

Some have been in the hospitals for several years, but are enjoying their own place in the community now
